Cobblers. [21 Dec 2009|10:50pm]

brisneyland

[rebelsketcher]
Hi folks,

My leather lace up boots (Roc brand...type you'd see on school students and hospitality peeps) I use for work are grinding down their heels. I think I've ground down about 2 layers or 8mm off either side of each shoe. I'm leaning outwards and tripping a lot.

Any recs for cobblers that do resoling around the SouthSide area? Good price and quality of work a bonus. These are $100 pair of shoes that are only 5 months old but since they get worn 6 days/wk for 42 hours each time...better to resole the things than buy another pair. That's what end of financial year will be for haha. It's only the heels that need fixing anyway. Comfy.

Mister Minit in Garden City any good? Apparently they do 10% off if you have RACQ Membership...they cut my keys real nice but not sure on the cobbler thing.

Thanks all ~

Where do you get your news?? [21 Dec 2009|03:37pm]

brisneyland

[this_is_panic]
Hello,

I am a Journalism student at the University of Queensland, and wanted to ask you guys some questions to help with a little background on my topic from real people. If you want to answer it would be really helpful, but please could you include your age, as this assignment is about different generations. And, if you don't mind your answer possibly being quoted in a University assignment (nowhere else) then please include your full name. It would be a great help guys!!!

Firstly, where do you guys get your news from?
Do you read newspapers, watch the news on TV, or get your news online, or any combination of these forms?

Is there a different level of trust in news that you read in the paper, watch on TV or read/view online?

And one more thing. Does anyone here actually create news content, for either online or offline media platforms? Does anyone write a news blog, for example, or has anyone contributed to one?

Thank you so much in advance for any insight into your news consumption or creation habits!

If for some reason you would like to say something in private, feel free to note me or email me at

looking for a specific personal trainer [20 Dec 2009|06:43pm]

brisneyland

[divabat]
Last year I was idly looking about at personal trainers and I found one in Brisbane whose specialty was training for dancers (besides just regular bog-standard training). I can't seem to find her now and Google isn't helping.

Any ideas of who she could be? Any other suggestions? My boyfriend and I are thinking of doing personal training together in the new year - he wants to improve overall fitness esp strength and flexibility (he's a geek who cycles occasionally) and since I do physical performance I want to maintain my fitness but have no real consistency!

I have a really vague memory of someone mentioning this recently on here so I thought I'd ask....

Is there a limit to how much rent can be put up between leases if you're staying on and renewing?

Botanic gardens pics [20 Dec 2009|03:21pm]

[asmallplanet]
I was really surprised to see these fruits in the CBD Botanic Gardens last week when I went on a photo taking walk. Jackfruit. As big as footballs some of them. Never tried jackfruit, but I wasn't planning on picking one. Cool hey? Photo is a link to larger version.

title or description

Behind the lj-cut is my first attempt at close up photography, showing ants feeding on a flower of some kind. It was windy and late and I didn't have my tripod so it is a rather average pic, but I'm happy with it for a first go. The photo is also a link taking you to a larger version, which I recommend as the small version doesn't do it justice. Read more )

Happy rainy day. :)

Anyon got a phone they no longer need? [20 Dec 2009|01:48am]

[ mood | tired ]

I've officially finished my Christmas shopping WOO HOO! Except for one thing ... my son's current mobile is pretty trashed. I hesitate to buy him a brand new one because he is not known for taking caring of his things (he tries - he's just very absentminded and easily distracted). So, I'd rather not buy him anything too expensive. I've been looking for a cheap phone but anything in our price range (under 30) is locked to a specific carrier and would cost 80 to 100 to unlock.

So, I come to you ... does anyone have a spare phone lying about that we could have/buy off of you? Nothing fancy, just a simple brick phone (he breaks flip phones and slide phones too easily). It'd need to be unlocked as well - unless it is locked to Virgin.

Thanks!!!

Seamstress? [19 Dec 2009|05:43pm]

brisneyland

[phoenixwind]
Hey everyone

So, I'm fed up with going through all the stores in Queen St Mall and Elizabeth Street and never finding anything I like. My wardrobe is poor and crying out for pretty new clothes, so I'm considering have them made by a seamstress. I've tried sewing on my own in the past, but I always get to a certain point and just give up - my last endeavour with a ruffled skirt with this lovely black brocade fabric which is now rotting away in my sewing basket, wasted and unfinished... I figure I should bite the bullet and pay someone to do it.

Can anyone recommend a seamstress in the Ashgrove/Red Hill/city area? I'd like someone who will not charge me excessively - maybe $50-100 for a skirt, if I provide the fabric and pattern. Someone who doesn't mind if I'd like to request a few changes in said pattern, and is willing to work with my suggestions. I don't want to make really fancy clothes - but I am particular about the kinds of details I like.

If anyone has used a seamstress and had a really good experience, I'd love to know... thanks!

Looking for an old friend [18 Dec 2009|03:11pm]

[sassywitch]
[ mood | hopeful ]

I don't know where else to look for an old school friend of mine so I figured I'd throw it out for the wise and wonderful Brisneylander's brains.

I haven't seen an old school friend since the second last day of primary school in 1977 and often wonder what happened to him.

His name is John Shelley, he would have been born in late 64 or 65, and we sat beside each other for at least our last two years of primary school at Bracken Ridge State School. He missed his last day of school because he slipped over and put his arm through a window. I always regret not having seen him to say goodbye. I went on to Sandgate High school and he went to a boys school (St Paul's I beliveve). He lived in Deagon at the time.

Over the years I have trawled facebook, myspace, the internet, I've even periodically sat down and called all the J Shelley's in the Qld phone books with no luck.

Anyone know him or have any ideas for me?

Desperately in need of work (Logan area) [18 Dec 2009|02:14pm]

brisneyland

[wicked_4_tw]
With lots of family and life crap going on I desperately need a job. I've been looking since Feb with no luck at all so I thought why not ask you guys!

Preferably in the area around the Logan Hyperdome with a minimum of 20 h/pw and a max of 60 h/pw.

I'm willing to do pretty much anything. I have experience with fresh produce, cash handling, working a register, cleaning, computer knowledge and basic office skills but I'm a quick study and eager to learn new things. I also hold a current Senior First Aid certificate.

I'm available to start immediately and work any hours, night or day.

Any help at all would be wonderful.

If so, can you tell me about it?

Fitballs [17 Dec 2009|09:27pm]

brisneyland

[moern]
I am in need of a fitball/physiotherapy ball/birthball. This should be easy, right? According to numerous sources, for my height, I need a ball with a 45cm diameter. The ones in my local Big W are either 65cm, or 75cm. Yeah. Not so much.

Has anyone seen a 45cm exercise ball for sale in Brisbane, for NOT $60 (which is what some online stores want to charge me for the thing... honestly, I can get a 75cm one for $15, but pay $60 for half as much material??)?

Bonus points if its in the CBD
And if its burst-resistant

Anyone use Chaos.com?

I have a $3.00 gift voucher thing that I'm not gonna use so it's up for grabs. I know it's not much but it might help to pay for postage or something.

It expires 10th January 2010.

I know I'm spamming everyone today, but a friend [SWIM - seriously] just asked me if I knew of any stores around the Gold Coast that sell kawaii stuff? Like Hello Kitty, etc, etc? The answer was, I don't - so I'm looking to you [info]brisneyland. I know it's not Brisbane-specific, but I thought someone might have a little info. to share.

Thanks!

Hair curlers - the old fashioned kind [17 Dec 2009|08:47am]

brisneyland

[leggz]
[ mood | crazy ]

I am hoping to pick up some fabulously old-fashioned hair curlers today - ie: plastic hard round things that curl your hair, as opposed to a curling iron or hair straightener. The problem is I don't know where to look for said item. I live in Hawthorne and would appreciate any and all suggestions that don't involve driving around all day.

Thanks all!

No Clean Feed - Stop Internet Censorship in Australia

As internet users, I figured [info]brisneyland would be just as upset as I am at this proposed "Clean Feed". I have found this site that has an online petition and a letter template to send to Senator Conroy, making it very very easy to get your important opinions heard.

Please take five minutes out of your day and send some feedback to the government on this issue. Every little bit counts.
